Relevant News

On Tuesday, 16th April, the Agreement was signed for the creation of the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery – Christoforou Collection and the donation of art pieces to the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery.

Larnaca Municipality expresses its gratitude to Maria and Charalambos Christoforou for their generous intention to donate part of their collection and artworks to the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery.

This initiative by the Christoforou couple significantly expands and enriches the Municipality of Larnaca’s art collection and simultaneously reinforces the Municipality’s efforts for culture to function as a parameter for education and development.

With the signing of the Agreement, part of the valuable Christoforou collection will be housed on the 1st floor of the Creativity and Culture Multipurpose Centre (formerly Larnaca Club) at 3 Zenon Kitieos Street, featuring works by Greek painters and engravers from the 19th to the 20th century.

The Christoforou collection covers a significant part of art history, as these painting and engraving works reflect the adventures, quests, and artistic means of that era through the inspiration of their creators.

This aspect serves cohesively, specifies the character of this particular collection, and provides the opportunity for study and comparison of different depiction methods and artistic styles.

During the signing, Larnaca Mayor Andreas Vyras praised the work and contribution of the Christoforou couple, noting that private collections in general play a crucial role as a source of inspiration and attraction to art since they gather exceptionally significant visual information.

“The love of the Christoforou couple has turned into study, and through the descriptions of experienced and esteemed curators, they convey what the artists wanted to express, the generational shifts, and the course of art,” he added.

“The breadth of the collection and its content impresses and moves us due to the collecting passion of the Christoforou couple.”

It is noted that the Christoforou couple, devoted to art, has painstakingly and persistently created a collection that includes significant works from around the world.

Charalambos Christoforou, alongside the services he provided through his role as an Ambassador, and Maria, studying art conservation, as collectors, with their keen interest and love for art, combined with their experienced eye and high aesthetic criteria, present us today with an artistic treasure that preserves historical memory and contributes to our self-awareness.

The exhibition of the Christoforou Collection in Larnaca, in a historic building of the city, is highly significant, and the signing of the Agreement transforms the intention into action, marking a milestone of cultural and educational activity that enhances the cultural heritage of Larnaca and broadens the horizons of the city.

Upon the completion of the curation of the exhibition of the artworks, the Larnaca Municipal Art Gallery – Christoforou Collection will open its doors to the public, offering a contribution of historical knowledge and aesthetic enjoyment.
