Kenan Ayaz’s trial at final stage

Relevant News

With 15 interim court decisions related to defence requests, the hearing on 12th April in the trial of Kurdish activist Kenan Ayaz at the Hamburg Federal Regional Court was marked.

According to the Observatory for the Trial of Kenan Ayaz, the trial is nearing its final stages.

Under German law, the parties are allowed to submit requests for the introduction of additional evidence, as well as to raise objections regarding the legality and acceptance of existing evidence.

In this context, the hearing on Friday revolved around a series of issues submitted in the form of objections.

These issues concern fair trial rights, inadequate interpretation and translation, the responsibility of the police authorities during the investigation of the case, and issues of court bias.

With previous decisions, the court had prohibited the defence from presenting specific articles to the German and Turkish press, which related to attempts to interfere with Kenan Ayaz’s trial.

“The reason for Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan’s expressions of gratitude towards the German Chancellor for the extradition of the Kurdish activist from Cyprus to Germany, as well as the broader effort of the Turkish state to interfere in the political trial against Kenan Ayaz,” notes the Observatory.

It adds that at the next hearing on 17th April, the issuance of another 40 interim decisions is expected, based on relevant objections that have accumulated.
