Greek embassy reminds its citizens of dual voting prohibition

Relevant News

Greek citizens residing in Cyprus must choose to vote either for candidates for the European Parliament from Greece or candidates from Cyprus, the Greek Embassy in Cyprus reminds in a press release regarding the prohibition of dual voting in the European elections on June 9, 2024.

The same applies to Greek citizens who hold Cypriot citizenship, it is noted.

As stated, the status of European citizenship recognises the right of all EU citizens to vote and stand as candidates in the European Parliament elections in a member state where they reside and of which they are not nationals.

The details and conditions for exercising these rights, it is added, are regulated by Council Directive 93/109/EC/6.12.1993, as amended by Directive 2013/1/EU/20.12.2012, and have been incorporated into the national law of each member state.

“Accordingly, EU citizens residing in another member state are provided with the option to either vote for candidates for the European Parliament from their own country as provided by their national law, or to vote for candidates from their country of residence,” it states.

“It should be noted that in case a violation of the relevant prohibition on dual voting is detected, this entails legal consequences based on national law and EU law,” concludes the announcement.
