Government satisfied with EU summit outcomes

Relevant News

With the adoption of the Conclusions on Turkey during yesterday’s Summit, the government’s goal of linking the EU-Turkish relations with the Cyprus issue has been achieved, said government spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

Speaking on state radio, Letymbiotis stated that last night, the Republic of Cyprus sent a message expecting Turkey to act constructively so that progress on the Cyprus issue could lead to progress in EU-Turkish relations.

He described paragraphs 9 and 10 of the Conclusions as significant, highlighting that the European Union attaches great importance to progress on Cyprus.

Regarding the referral of the strategic discussion on EU-Turkish relations to COREPER, Letymbiotis said this was also a proposal from Nicosia, as after this development, all member states will have a say in the evolution of EU-Turkish relations.

Referring to the visit that President Christodoulides and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make to Lebanon on May 2nd, the government spokesman emphasised that the focal point of the talks will be the additional economic support package for Lebanon.

He said that this specific package is under development; however, he expressed confidence that by the time of the visit, progress on this issue will have been made, allowing President Christodoulides and Ursula von der Leyen to provide relevant updates to Lebanon’s leadership.
