Friends of Akamas: Destructive interventions by road works in Akamas

Relevant News

In an ecological intervention, Friends of Akamas argues that an unacceptable disaster is currently unfolding in Natura 2000 Protected Areas, the most biodiverse and beautiful region in Cyprus, areas that are also of European significance.

In a press release by the Friends of Akamas, it is noted that the destruction is taking place in the context of unnecessary alterations to the existing forest management roads of the state forest, which the Department of Forests has decided to convert into a road network for private vehicles within the forthcoming Akamas National Forest Park (ANFP).

Friends of Akamas highlight the following:

  1. Legally binding terms for environmental protection in the area are not being observed but rather violated.
  2. The interventions do not constitute simple improvements, as stipulated in the relevant terms, but a comprehensive creation of new roads.
  3. Unjustified land expropriations and road widening are taking place, destroying an untouched natural environment.
  4. Multiple retaining walls are being constructed, which are entirely incompatible with the local natural environment.
  5. Simultaneously, illegal structures have not only not been demolished but continue to operate without disruption.

Friends of Akamas call for an immediate halt to the related work, to first preserve what can be saved and secondly, reconsideration by the relevant authorities on how to stop this ongoing destructive course.
