The situation in the Liopetri-Avgorou area is suffocating, as according to reports, smoke from the burning of waste at the illegal dumpsite has enveloped the surrounding area, especially Liopetri, since last Monday, 1st April.
According to the Ecologists’ Movement, there is strong protest from the local community about the fumes.
The head of the environmental department, as highlighted in the announcement, stated that the problem cannot be easily resolved because they do not know who is starting the fires. Several times they have issued fine warrants to the communities and have resorted to legal action.
They support the residents’ protests against the intense fumes and call on the relevant departments to take responsibility, as it is observed that the problem cannot be solved by the communities because they do not have the funds for cleaning the area or other illegal small dumpsites.
“People don’t know where to dispose of their garbage, and unfortunately, they resort to places where others also dump.”
