Facilities at Kyperounta hospital inadequate

Relevant News

Ward rooms lack toilets and showers, and the new rooms are not ventilated, despite being intended for patients with tuberculosis, and they don’t even have windows.

“Conditions at Kyperounta Hospital are appalling in some cases. Every day when I return home, I feel ashamed,” said Marinos Lemesis, a doctor at the hospital, to the Health Committee of the Parliament.

“There are timelines set,” he said, “for the upgrading of the buildings. I’m not dismissing that. Many important projects have been completed recently.”

However, he added, “there are many more issues. We say the new tuberculosis clinic should operate properly. The planning of State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) states that only one part will function. The negative pressure unit won’t operate. Patients with tuberculosis need it. We have had a CT scanner in the hospital since 2023 that hasn’t been installed yet. I am waiting for the ground floor to open for the radiological machines to be installed.”

The community leader of the area was also very vocal in his stance, even questioning if there is an “invisible third hand obstructing the start of the work.”

“I feel very angry because for a year and a half, we have been given promises three times that were not kept. I did not come here to hear about other timelines and promises. I respect the institution of the MP and I also respect the 100,000 inhabitants of the mountainous areas I represent. And I do not accept this situation. They need to tell us why what was promised is not being done.”

The spokesperson for SHSO, Charalambos Charilaou, referred to the plans in place for the upgrade of the Troodos hospital building and the processes that have been promoted. He admitted that the building indeed needs serious upgrading, and SHSO has acknowledged this and is planning accordingly.
