EAC fears blackout in summer 2020 as tender hits snag

Relevant News

The Electricity Authority has warned there is a risk of a blackout in the summer 2020 after  a tender to install a selective catalyst reactor system at Vasilikos Power Station hit legal obstacles, Phileleftheros reported on Friday.

It said that the EAC had last year invited bids for the reactor system for boilers 1, 2, and 3 at Vasilikos Power Station which are fuelled by heavy fuel oil. But the tender stopped at the Tender Review Board  following an appeal by one of the companies whose bid had been rejected for non-compliance with specific technical terms of the tender.

The EAC objected to the temporary halt of the tender procedure citing deadlines for Cyprus to comply with EU emission requirements and the large cost of any delay, Phileleftheros said.

The permits for the three boilers — which have the capacity to generate about a quarter of Cyprus’ total electricity production — expire in the beginning of 2020. The EAC fears that if they are rendered inoperable, then Cyprus risks power cuts when demand peaks in summer 2020.
