DISY prepares for electoral showdown

Relevant News

Alarm bells are ringing at all levels within the Democratic Rally ahead of the elections.

In DISY, there has been significant activity in recent days, with the President of the party calling an emergency meeting of leaders and stakeholders from the Nicosia province to rally everyone for the battle of the capital’s municipality.

In another instance, according to our sources, Annita Demetriou called former Ministers and party executives, asking them to step forward to show that everyone is working together for the DISY’s victory in the dual election contest on 9th June.

During the meetings last week, the former President of the party, Averof Neophytou, went up to the 5th floor of Pindarou for a face-to-face meeting with the party’s President, reviewing the party’s progress towards the elections.

According to our information, the meeting took place in a very positive atmosphere, with Annita Demetriou asking for everyone’s support for the party’s victory and Averof Neophytou conveying what he recently said in an interview with Phileleftheros, that he stands by the party and its leadership for the good of the country.

The Nicosia Municipality is a reference point for DISY, which, for various reasons, wants to win.

The candidacy of Nicos Tornaritis is supported by both DIKO and DIPA, so his non-election would be considered a failure for all three parties, but especially for DISY, from which he comes and has been the party’s parliamentary representative for many years.

During the emergency meeting at DISY on Monday afternoon, the province’s MPs, the deputy mayoral candidates, and the current municipal councillors were called, and the message to everyone was that they should work collectively to help elect Tornaritis.

The conclusion drawn is that the battle for the capital’s municipality is not easy at all, and therefore there should be no complacency.

This is also evident from various polls that have not been made public, which indicate that the outcome will be close, hence there is concern that people might be indifferent and not turn out to vote.

Regarding the second meeting, Annita Demetriou invited DISY the former Ministers of the Anastasiades Government, Ioannis Kasoulides, Haris Georgiades, and Christoforos Fokaides, as well as Andreas Pentaras and Konstantinos Adamides, with whom she essentially discussed the elections, the stakes the party has to win, but also the difficulties it faces, asking them essentially to stand by her and work together.

This aims at two axes: on the one hand, to show that there is a collective effort to win the European election battle, while at the same time, DISY calls for reinforcement and effort to highlight political positions by taking the lead on major issues, such as foreign policy.

It was no coincidence that yesterday’s statement by DISY’s Haris Georgiades, a party MP and chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, was made about the situation in the Middle East.

In DISY, they are also preparing for a new press conference on Economic issues, which will take place tomorrow as part of the announcement to present positions weekly on various topics. Last Friday, the conference on Immigration took place.

Over time, a more oppositional stance against the Christodoulides Government has been established in DISY. Although there are voices within the leadership that desire a softer line, maintaining communication channels with the Presidential Palace, at the same time, the tendency towards a stronger opposition stance is reinforced.

The party’s President herself, as reported by sources from DISY, shows greater determination in this direction.

This is also contributed to by the poor image of the Government in a large part of society and the dissatisfaction of the party’s leadership with the Presidential stance on a series of issues, particularly with the alleged indirect involvement in favor of DISY candidates against DISY candidates in local elections.
