Cyprus to mark World Haemophilia Day

Relevant News

The 17th of April is established as World Haemophilia Day, aiming to highlight the unique challenges faced by people with haemophilia, a condition where bleeding disorders hinder proper blood clotting.

On this day, the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) organises a series of events, including the “Light it Up Red!” campaign. As part of this campaign, landmarks and monuments worldwide are illuminated in red to raise awareness and provide information on inherited bleeding disorders.

The theme of this year’s event is “Equal Access for All: Recognising All Bleeding Disorders.” The vision of the World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) and the Cyprus Haemophilia Association is for a world where all individuals with inherited bleeding disorders have access to care, regardless of the type of bleeding disorder, gender, age, or residence.

In 2023, over 150 landmarks/buildings worldwide participated in the Light it Up Red campaign, setting a new record! The effort is to achieve a new record in 2024!

Cyprus, through the Cyprus Haemophilia Association (CHA), actively participates in this effort. The municipalities of Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca will illuminate the Fountain of Freedom Square, the Limassol Town Hall, and Artemidos Avenue in Larnaca, respectively, in red on April 17th.

Additionally, as part of awareness and information campaigns, the Cyprus Haemophilia Association, in collaboration with the Medical School of the University of Cyprus, co-organises a lecture by Professor Michalis Makris on “Current and Future Haemophilia Treatment” (the lecture will be in English with simultaneous translation in Greek).

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, 8th May 2024, at 18:00 in Room B108, Council-Senate Building Anastasios G. Leventis, and will be open to the public.
