Limassolian architect Yiannis Armeftis is set to announce his independent candidacy for the coastal city’s mayoralty on Monday, February 5.

According to an announcement from his campaign office, Armeftis will present his bid at the Lanitis Carob Mill in Limassol.

The mayoral hopeful is expected to unfold his vision for the city, outlining objectives and priorities.

Yiannis Armeftis is a native of Limassol, born and raised in the city in 1971. He has been running his own architectural firm since 1995, following his graduation in Architecture from the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

As an architect, he has received several national and international awards. He has served as a municipal councillor of Limassol from 2007 to 2016, during which he was the president of the city’s Development and Tourism Committee, the leader of the municipal group of centre-right party DIKO (2012-2016), and the representative of the Union of Municipalities in the Deviation Studies Council (2015-2017).

He is a founding member of the “Yia ti Lemeso” (For Limassol) initiative, a collective focusing on social cohesion, sustainable cities, animal welfare and sports, among others.

Armeftis’ father, Andreas, was murdered by the nationalist right-wing paramilitary group EOKA B in June 1974.

In 2014, he founded the “Andreas Armeftis Foundation for the Study of Democracy” and since 2018, he has been the president of the Pan-Cyprian Organisation of Relatives of Fallen Resistance Fighters.

Considered to be a strong candidate, backed by Limassol’s progressive circles, he is expected to mount a serious challenge for the mayoralty of the city against incumbent Nicos Nicolaides.

The election will take place on June 9, 2024.
