Cyprus police warns against fake emails

Relevant News

The police once again draw the public’s attention to a form of email messages falsely claiming to be sent by the Cyprus Police.

As a security measure and to combat online fraud, the Police recommend that recipients of such messages adjust their email account settings so that fraudulent messages are transferred to spam, thereby reducing the possibility of sending and disseminating these messages.

The electronic messages are sent from fake email addresses and include a letter bearing the logos of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order and the Cyprus Police.

The letter is written in Greek and purports to be from the Crime Fighting Department of the Police Headquarters, signed by a Police Officer.

The false letter claims that the recipients are involved and accused of various criminal offenses, such as cybercrime and child pornography. Through the false letter, recipients are urged to respond to provide their version of events.

The Police informs the public that this letter is fake and such messages are never sent by the Cyprus Police to citizens or organizations.

These messages constitute an attempt to deceive citizens, with the perpetrators aiming for financial gain. The public is urged to be particularly cautious and not to respond in case of receiving such messages.

It is recommended that in the event of receiving such messages, citizens avoid any communication or transaction through these malicious messages and suspicious email addresses and links mentioned in them.

It is also advised that after opening the messages, they select the option “Report as spam” through their email account settings so that the receipt of messages from the fraudsters’ email account is automatically recognized as unwanted.
