Relevant News

Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air is approaching its 20th anniversary next month, highlighting its longstanding commitment to Cyprus and its contribution to the island nation’s booming tourism industry.

Wizz Air established a base at Larnaca International Airport in 2010 and has since become a key player in Cypriot aviation. The airline prides itself on its young fleet, boasting an average aircraft age of 4.2 years. While Wizz Air operated four Airbus A320 family aircraft in Cyprus during the 2023 season, they have adjusted their deployment to three for 2024.

Wizz Air has garnered recognition for its environmental practices, being awarded the “Global Environmental Sustainability Airline Group of the Year 2023” by CAPA – Centre for Aviation. The company’s fleet’s youthfulness is further acknowledged with the “World’s 3rd Youngest Aircraft Fleet 2024” (over 100 aircraft) title by ch-aviation.

Wizz Air also secured the “Most Sustainable Low-Cost Airline in 2023” designation by World Finance magazine.

The carrier played a pivotal role in Cyprus’ record-breaking tourist season in 2023. Wizz Air transported passengers from key markets like the United Kingdom, Poland, Greece, Armenia, Romania, and Hungary.

To meet surging demand, the airline increased its seat capacity by 70% in 2023, contributing to the arrival of over 11 million foreign tourists in Cyprus.

Wizz Air maintains an impressive 99.63% flight completion rate for 2023. The company operated over 11,000 flights (a 63% increase from 2022) and is estimated to have injected €200 million into the Cypriot economy. Wizz Air holds the leading position for passenger numbers at Larnaca Airport, solidifying its place as a major contributor to Cypriot air travel.

In 2023, Wizz Air carried over 7 million passengers on flights to 16 countries and 26 destinations from their Larnaca base.

Looking ahead, the airline will offer 1.3 million seats on 25 routes to 16 countries from Cyprus in 2024.

Beyond the 130 direct jobs Wizz Air has created, the company’s presence is estimated to support an additional 5,500 jobs in related sectors.
