She fought against Dora Bakoyannis’ proposal for Kosovo to become a member of the Council of Europe.
A proposal which poses serious risks for the case of Cyprus, as indicated by the head of the Cypriot delegation, Christiana Erotokritou, deputy president of DIKO, in her speech at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
“For Cyprus, it is a matter of principle that territorial integrity and sovereignty of internationally recognised nations should never be compromised. Accepting territories that unilaterally declare independence and have not been accepted or recognised by the UN as full members of this Organisation will create a dangerous precedent, especially in today’s extremely unstable international environment,” Erotokritou noted.
Against the Report, along with Erotokritou, voted also the other representative of Cyprus, Giorgos Loucaides, parliamentary representative of AKEL.
Dora Bakoyannis’ proposal passed by a majority and the concern that this might open Pandora’s box for Cyprus as well is now widespread in diplomatic circles.
