Auditor General faces dismissal bid; explosive statements anticipated

Relevant News

Attorney General, George Savvides, has initiated a bid to dismiss Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides before the Supreme Constitutional Court, alleging “inappropriate behavior” in a move that promises to ignite a political firestorm.

Savvides’ application accuses Michaelides of undermining his office through public disputes over legal opinions, controversial social media activity, and the handling of complaints against the Deputy Attorney General.

The “inappropriate behaviour” cited includes references to high-profile cases such as the “black van” surveillance scandal, alleged irregularities in the Ministry of Defense, and controversies surrounding the Independent Authority against Corruption.

Michaelides’ legal team intends to call prominent legal figures, whose testimonies are expected to delve into politically sensitive matters. Files related to these past cases could be submitted as evidence, potentially exposing details previously shielded from public view.

The Attorney General claims that Michaelides’ public clashes with him are motivated by ulterior motives and create “doubts in the minds of third parties” regarding Michaelides’ ability to serve with integrity.

Michaelides’ defenders maintain that the Auditor General’s independent oversight role necessitates expressing opinions that may differ from those of the Attorney General and that the accusations lack merit. They also dispute allegations of misconduct concerning the handling of complaints lodged at the Independent Authority against Corruption.
