Tensions rise as Attorney General seeks Auditor General’s removal

Relevant News

The dossier accompanying Attorney General Giorgos Savvides’ request for the dismissal of the Auditor General, which was filed in the Registry of the Supreme Constitutional Court, is hefty.

The application, submitted by lawyers Dinos Kalli and George Valiantis of the law firm Loukis Papafilippou & Co., concerns a request from the head of the Legal Service to dismiss Auditor General Odysseas Michailides for inappropriate conduct.

The application will be examined by the nine judges of the Constitutional Court, which will convene as a Judicial Council following a specific procedure akin to trial omens.

According to philenews, the application was accompanied by a very large dossier containing all the evidence on which the request is based.

Among other things, detailed statements, positions, postings, or announcements by the Auditor General or the Press Officer of the Audit Service are mentioned, regarding issues concerning both the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General, culminating in Michailides’ allegations to the Anti-Corruption Authority against Savvas Angelides, alleging a conflict of interest.

The decision of the Independent Authority, essentially rejecting the allegations of the Auditor General, also prompted the filing of the request for Michailides’ dismissal.

According to the same information, the application also refers to other actions and behaviours of Michailides involving individuals outside the Legal Service.

The application was expected to be stamped and then signed by the Attorney General and, with the seal of the Registry, delivered via a private courier to the Auditor General.

Legal circles emphasized to philenews that if the application reaches the hearing stage, then the Auditor General’s side is determined to bring forth old cases handled by the Legal Service, such as the “black van” and the Katsounotou case, calling witnesses to court.

The legal world and society are facing an unprecedented clash of institutions, the outcome of which will leave neither side satisfied.

Events that will come to light for the first time will be heard, and we will see independent state officials attempting to undermine each other, with all that entails.
