New school protocol for rising number of students with dependence problem

Relevant News

The Cyprus National Addictions Authority has joined forces with the Education Ministry to draft a new protocol for students with a dependence problem – something which is alarmingly on the rise.

Gambling addiction among the youth in Cyprus is a recent and an additional one to drugs, smoking and alcohol, Philenews also reported on Friday.

The new protocol, which has already been sent to schools by the Ministry, provides that the one responsible for the implementation of a student’s referral process is the Counselling Teacher.

The new protocol’s implementation first requires the creation of a core – a group of counselling teachers – who will need primarily training by staff of treatment centers.

This will be followed by the training of their colleagues in  schools.

Specifically, the protocol refers to the “Target Group”, which consists of: a) students who asks for help and b) students who do not ask for help on their own but are identified based on some characteristics that may refer to substance use.
