Monica Demetriades art exhibition ‘Moments in Time’

Monica Demetriades will present her new paintings at Apocalypse Gallery from May 22 to June 7.

Her work revolves around locations in her beloved homeland Cyprus. Monica is inspired by the clear Cyprus sky and the luminosity of its landscapes through the sensitive colours that enrich her compositions .

Monica’s work covers two cycles in this period. The first one reflects  an entirely abstract approach where through free brushstrokes and some geometrical shapes, but also with bold colours and their interactions she creates dynamic compositions that represents landscapes, seascapes and skyscapes in new dimensions.

The second cycle of her work mainly deals with “Moments in Time” in the daily life of people. With backgrounds such as the sea, sky, land, gardens and objects of daily life are imaginatively juxtaposed on Monica’s canvases.

With pure touches and with much abstraction as to the subject her work is  rounded with sophisticated simplicity.

In this abstract climate one can detect elements of realism such as a kitchen bowl, a vase with flowers, dolphins in the sea and birds in the sky.

Monica has also created a number of monotypes. A monotype is a painting that goes through a printmaking process by hand. It is a one of a kind art work. Thus the word monotype. Each one is different, a unique piece of art of which she paints by hand and adds mixed media.

Monica was born in Nicosia but grew up in the multicultural city of London. She studied art at Hornsey College of Art and subsequently at Middlesex University where she earned a BA Honours degree in Graphic Design. Her love and passion for experimental painting and printmaking led her to further studies at Central St Martins University of the Arts London.

Monica is already a well known Anglo Cypriot  Artist with many years of distinguished work. She has had seven individual exhibitions in Cyprus and London and she participated in a number of group exhibitions.

She will be presenting her paintings and monotypes  “Moments in Time” at the Apocalypse Gallery on Wednesday May 22 at 7.30 pm. The exhibitions will run until June 7.
