Balmoral Castle opens up private room tours for first time ever

Relevant News

For the first time ever, Balmoral Castle, the Scottish residence of the British Royal Family, will be offering exclusive tours of private rooms within the castle itself.

These “castle interior tours” will take place between July 1 and August 4, 2024, offering a rare glimpse into the heart of the Royal Family’s summer retreat.

Groups will be limited to just 10 visitors each, with tickets priced at £100, or £150 with a traditional afternoon tea included, according to Sky News.

This unprecedented access comes before King Charles and Queen Camilla arrive for their annual summer stay at Balmoral. The Balmoral Castle website emphasises the unique nature of these tours, stating they are the first of their kind since the castle’s completion in 1855.

Previously, tours focused on the grounds and gardens, with a limited peek inside the castle via the grand ballroom.

The new tours, however, promise “a historical journey through several of the beautiful rooms within Balmoral Castle.”

Visitors can expect to learn about the castle’s history, its significance to generations of royals, and how the rooms are used today by the King, Queen, and other members of the family.

The tour also includes a visit to the ballroom, showcasing King Charles’ collection of watercolours depicting royal residences, alongside outfits worn by members of the Royal Family past and present.

This exclusive access to Balmoral coincides with another royal first: the opening of the East Wing of Buckingham Palace. For the first time ever, this historic section, famous for its central balcony, will be accessible to the public through guided tours in July and August.

While the East Wing remains in use for official functions, visitors can explore a selection of rooms on the principal floor, including the grand corridor adorned with treasures from the Royal Collection.
