In the state of irresponsibility…

Relevant News

If one were to turn back time – even just the recent years – and delve into archival material, they would have no difficulty concluding that the quintessential “fruit” thriving in this place – it seems there’s an ideal climate favouring it – is the existence of scandals, even where one wouldn’t suspect.

If one were to take the trouble to enumerate and name them, they would undoubtedly get lost in endless lists, to the point where the “maze” pales in capturing reality.

It is also a fact that the frequency with which these blatant cases come to light is such that the word “scandal” loses its meaning.

It even tends to become an integral part of our normality and daily life. Discussing a new scandal revelation is becoming commonplace, if not outright normal. Moreover, the notion that being able to deceive and snatch in this place is considered a form of prowess is ingrained.

However one perceives it, it’s an ability, even if it shatters the bones of our children in the Imprisoned Graves. Just last week, another three or four cases were added to the panel, for which the saying “at the deaf man’s doorbell you can ring as much as you like” finds its exemplary application.

Since not only does the situation persist but it exacerbates, it’s time to face realities head-on.

One of them is the answer to the agonising question, albeit with doses of truth and sincerity, because as easily as such scandals are uncovered, they are equally easily covered up or even buried.

Furthermore, the louder the outcry at their revelation, the more the sense that they land softly. And, of course, life goes on as “blissfully” as ever on this island.

The challenging chapter, however much some rush to give their evaluation, e.g. about impunity, which is a weighty reality in itself, concerns deeper causes and triggers. Apart from the particularly sensitive issue of Education, which in recent years appears denuded of its humanistic and pedagogical elements, there are other aspects we unfortunately neglect to highlight.

In conclusion, I will mention only one, which I deem significant in my opinion. There’s talk about taking responsibility – a term that has somewhat lost its true meaning – but when did we, the “common mortals” who watch all these never-ending collapses, truly assume responsibilities?

With the scandalous passivity we tolerate them with. Moreover, with what responsibility do we elect our leadership? These are certainly not rhetorical questions.
