A 74 year old woman was found unconscious in the sea off Ayia Napa at around 9.15 am on Sunday. Life guards brought her to shore but despite their best efforts the woman did not regain consciousness.
She was taken to Famagusta Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The woman is reported to be a tourist from Austria who was on holiday in Cyprus. The exact cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem.
