With presidential elections 15 months away possible candidates come to the fore

Relevant News

Presidential elections in Cyprus might still be 15 months away but some candidates have already expressed an interest in standing and others have not but began their campaign anyway.

In the right-wing ruling Disy there is an obvious split in their preferred candidate with insiders pointing the finger for some time now at both party leader Averof Neophytou and Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.

However, a third possible party candidate has come to the fore and this is former Finance Minister and high-ranking party member Harris Georgiades.

In Opposition left-wing Akel the message sent out is that the country needs progressive change and that procedures within the party on their possible candidate have not begun yet.

A much-rumoured possible candidate for the party is  human rights lawyer Achilleas Demetriades who has expressed interest to run in February 2023’s election.

Nicosia lawyer Marios Eliades, who has harboured presidential ambitions for decades, has also announced his interest to run.

The big question for both Akel and Disy is with whom they will join forces to make their presidential bid a success.

Centre Diko is probably the kingmaker and their leader Nicolas Papadopoulos already making a statement that all scenarios are open for his party.

Diko is expected to take the big political decision on their presidential election ally at its congress in January.
