Water levels at dams rise to 60%

Water reserves at the island’s dams have hit 60% of total capacity after one of the best winters in recent memory while Kourris dam — by far the island’s biggest is nearly half full. Asprokremmos, the second largest dam, is nearly 80% full.

Figures posted on the website of the department Water Development  Department show that water stocks are nearly three times what they were on the same day last year.

Eight of the 18 dams have already overflowed — Germasoyia, Polemidhia, Mavrokolymbos, Argakas, Pomos, Ayia Marina Chrysochous, Xyliatos and Kalopanayiotis.

Since October 1 a total of 145,131 million cubic metres (mcm) of water has flowed into the dams. This is already better than the total inflow for the second best year this decade and fast approaching the 191,754 mcm collected in the dams in the best year of  2011/2012.

In contrast, last year saw only 44,897 mcm collected in the dams, prompting authorities to announce water saving measures.
