Vasilikos area residents on Wednesday begin indefinite blockade of Pentakomo waste site

Residents of Vasilikos communities on Wednesday began the blockade of the waste management site in protest over health and ecological risks in their heavily-industrialized area.

Residents of the nine communities have already blocked the entrance to the electricity authority’s power station for an hour. And they will then plan to move their protest to the waste management site at Pentakomo which they say they plan to blockade indefinitely.

“The situation in Pentakomo area is out of hand,” community leader Pambos Charalambous told Active Radio early on Wednesday.

“The residents of the wider area are upset and very concerned over their health and that of their children. We had three fires in a short period of time, two in the landfill and one in the car tires factory with the smoke creating a suffocating atmosphere,” he added.
