Vaccination of children 5-11 to begin soon

Cyprus proceeds with vaccinations of children aged 5 to 11 years old against COVID-19.

The Health Ministry will receive onĀ  Monday December 13 the first dozes of vaccines for children against COVID-19, and vaccinations of children aged 5 to 11 years old will begin on December 16 or December 20. Vaccinations will take place in all districts by appointment.

Speaking during a press conference, the Permanent Secretary of the Health Ministry, Christina Yiannaki, said that a plan has been made for vaccinations to begin within the next days.

Yiannaki said that the doze for children is 10 micrograms, while in vaccines for people aged 12 years old and over is 30 micrograms.

She also noted that it has been estimated that the vaccine is 90.7% effective to the prevention of COVID-19 and that the most usual side effects for children aged 5 to 11 years old are similar with those for people who are 12 years old and over.

Yiannaki said that until December 8, the percentage of people over 18 years old who have been vaccinated was 85.2%, while 81.5% of the adults had received two doses of the vaccine. Moreover 66.2% of the adults who were entitled to get the third dose, had taken the 3rd jab.

As regards people aged 16-17 years old, the Health Ministry`s Permanent Secretary said that 49.2% were vaccinated with one doze, while 42.8% concluded their vaccination scheme.

With regard to people 12-15 years old, 37.4% of them were vaccinated with one doze, and 29.6% concluded their vaccination scheme.

Yiannaki also noted that 30% of the cases traced during the last weeks concern individuals up to 18 years old, and that until December 5,Ā  2021, a total ofĀ  29, 530 COVID- 19 cases concerning children were traced.
