Relevant News

Two men — a 25 year old Egyptian and a 39 year old Syrian – pleaded not guilty before Limassol Criminal Court on Thursday to the manslaughter of an 18 year old who died after taking drugs on June 14.

A third defendant, a 28 year old Syrian, will stand trialĀ  before the district court as he faces only a charge of drug possession to which he pleaded guilty.

The 18 year old was rushed to Limassol Hospital on June 10 in a comatose condition. He had suffered a heart attack after ingesting drugs. Because of the critical nature of his condition, he was transferred to Nicosia Hospital where he died on June 14, a day before his 18th birthday.

The 25 year old was identified by the friend of the young man as the person who had sold him MDMA (type of Ecstasy), at a Trachoni cafeteria on June 10. The 28 year old was arrested at the cafeteria after police found him in possession of drugs. The 39 year old manager of the cafeteria was arrested on the basis of a pending arrest warrant after drugs were found in his cafeteria.

All three have asked for legal aid which was approved by the court. The court said that the third defendant should stand trial at the district court and asked the other two to answer to charges of manslaughter and supplying drugs.

They pleaded not guilty and the trial was set for February 28. The court will decide on Monday whether they should remain in police custody pending their trial.
