The richest UK Cypriots

The Sunday Times Rich List for 2019 is out and Parikiaki newspaper singled out the Cypriot entries.

  1. Alki David (Leventis Family) is the richest UK Cypriot at No 59 of the Times 1,000 list. David, Parikiaki says, is valued at £2.35 billion. He was born in Nigeria to Cypriot parents and lives in the UK and Los Angeles, USA.

Line of work: David is a member of the Leventis family who merged their global bottling business with Coca Cola to form LSE listed global beverage bottler Coca Cola HBC. Parikiaki values the company at £7.39 billion of which a £1.7 billion stake belongs to the Leventis family.

2. Lazari family valued at £2.34 billion at position 61 are the second richest UK Cypriots.

Line of work: Chris Lazari, who died three years ago, started off in fashion with Drendie Girl and later founded Lazari Investments that managed property and owned 2.8m sq ft of London commercial space plus 113 residential properties and 731 freeholds that is now run by his three children Len, Nicholas and Andrie, Parikiaki says, noting that their most prominent asset is Greater London House headquarters of online fashion retailer Asos.

3. John Christodoulou valued at £1.8 billion at position 82 is the 3rd richest UK Cypriot on the list.

Line of work: Christodoulou is the second-largest property freeholder in Canary Wharf with 2m sq ft which includes two five-star hotels; the Marriott and the Four Seasons. He also owns, according to Parikiaki, 2,000 residential and commercial freehold units in Central London, Brazilian land, New York apartments, Manchester’s Hilton Tower and Liverpool’s Radisson Blu.

4. Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou and family are the fourth richest UK Cypriots at No 85, valued at £1.754 billion.

Line of work: Hadji-Ioannou owns the European trademark for the word easy and another thousand trademarks with easy as a prefix, Parikiaki reports, adding that he and his family have a 34% share in the budget airline EasyJet.

5. Theo Paphitis is at number five of richest UK Cypriots, No 451 on the Times Richest List with a value of £290 million.

Line of work: Paphitis specializes in company turnarounds. His three main businesses, according to Parikiaki, are stationers Ryman, hardware chain Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue Lingerie. He also owns commercial properties across the UK.

6. Stelios Stefanou is at number 858 of the Times list with a wealth of £140 million.

He built up the Accord maintenance that was sold for £180 million in 2007. His assets include a £50 million Mayfair property owned by the Duke of Clarence before he became King William IV, Parikiaki reported.

7. Tony Kleanthous is at No 915 with a fortune of £131 million.

Line of work: Kleanthous sold cars before moving into petrochemicals and mobile phones and now medical imaging and diagnostics via London’s TIC health.

THE YOUNG 50 RICH LIST 

Parikiaki also mentioned that at No 31 of the Times’ 50 Young Rich List is UK Cypriot Alex Solomou valued at £24 million. Solomou owns the entertainment platform LADbible.
