A special ward to handle patients suspected of having coronavirus started operation at Paphos Hospital today.

Those that test positive will be transferred to Famagusta Hospital which is the referral institution for Covid-19 for treatment or home for self-isolation depending on their condition.

Acting head of Paphos Hospital Dr Iosif Moutiris said that the ward for suspect cases is on the the third floor of the hospital with ten single-bed rooms.

It will be staffed by three doctors and 23 nurses, and will also have its own assistant, cleaner and messenger who will not enter other areas of the hospital.

Moreover, the ICU at the hospital also started operation today while instructions are pending regarding other clinics.

The hospital has been in near lockdown after more than a dozen health professionals tested positive for coronavirus and scores of others have been in self-isolation. They are due to begin returning to work.

The A&E, the dialysis and Thalassaemia units as well as the lab and X Ray department  have been operating with skeleton staff.

However, after a patient in the dialysis unit tested positive for coronavirus, all the patients in the same group as well as the health care professionals will be re-tested, the Cyprus News Agency said.
