Supreme Court leaves President Anastasiades exposed over presidential aides issue

Relevant News

The Supreme Court has left President Nicos Anastasiades “totally exposed” after it decided on Wednesday that his recourse over the dismissal of four presidential aides was unacceptable.

In December last year, a budget amendment saw the dismissal of four presidential aides – one of whom a close relative of the President – and the issue ended up for adjudication before the Supreme Court.

The President had described as unacceptable the parliament’s “unconstitutional and arbitrary action to intervene in the executive”.

Wednesday’s Supreme Court decision means that the employment of the four associates would be terminated at the end of the administration’s term – that is, early next year.

The issue of the four associates of the President was raised before parliament by Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides who had indicated that they should leave their positions the same time Anastasiades’ presidency ends.
