Some showers later today, temperatures at 18 C inland

Some showers and thunderstorms are possible later today, particularly in the mountains and in the west, with more unsettled weather forecast for tomorrow.

Police are also warning that there is currently thick fog in the Troodos where visibility is low and drivers are urged to be particularly careful, to drive slowly and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

In its early morning weather bulletin, the Met Office said a northeasterly stream of air is affecting the area while weak low pressure is forecast from Wednesday on.

Tuesday will be start off mainly fine while increased cloud at intervals may lead to isolated, mainly light showers. Gradually the weather will become partly cloudy and locally mainly cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms forecast from midday on, mainly in the mountains and in the west.

Temperatures will rise to 18 C inland and on the coasts and around 8 C in the higher mountains.

Tonight will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy, with local showers or thunderstorms forecast, particularly on the coast. Locally in the higher Troodos peaks there will be snow or sleet.

Temperatures will fall to 8 C inland, 10 C on the coast and around 1 C in the higher Troodos peaks. Locally in the mountains and semi-mountainous areas there will be frost.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms as well as snow or sleet locally in the mountains. From the late in the afternoon the weather will become mainly fine.

Thursday will be initially mainly fine but will later become partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy with light showers mainly in the west and in the mountains. In the higher Troodos peaks there will be sleet.

From late in the afternoon on Thursday and on Friday the weather will be partly cloudy and at intervals cloudy with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. In the higher Troodos peaks there will be snow or sleet while on Friday night there will be snow locally at lower altitudes.

Temperatures will edge up until Thursday but will drop a little on Friday, remaining a little above average for the time of year.

The depth of snow at Troodos Square at the time of issue of the early morning weather bulletin was 48 cm.
