Relevant News

The seasonal flu has begun to leave behind deaths in Cyprus with the elderly group being the ones most at risk, Philenews reported on Wednesday.

Afterall, four out of the six deaths recorded between December 1 and 24 concerned that age group.

The highest number of flu associated deaths recorded in recent years was in 2019 with 17 deaths from influenza by mid-March.

The Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare are considering vaccinating all residents of old people’s homes in the same procedure followed during the coronavirus pandemic.

And the Ministry of Health keeps calling for vaccination of people belonging to the high-risk groups stressing that the flu continues to be active till mid-March.

The Ministryā€™s Elizabeth Constantinou said “170,000 flu vaccines were made available in Cyprus and so far only about 110,000 have been used.”

This, she added, means that about 60,000 remain unavailable.

In addition to the flu, health authorities went on alert last Friday when a total of 105 new cases of coronavirus had been recorded in nursing homes in the previous week.
