President expected to announce second covid-related lockdown in Limassol, Paphos

Relevant News

President Nicos Anastasiades on Wednesday evening will address the nation to announce further measures to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Cyprus after a meeting with his Cabinet.

Insiders have said a second lockdown in the coastal cities of Limassol and Paphos where the number of infections is alarmingly high is inevitable. Stricter measures all over Cyprus are also on the way.

The President has already sent the message the Mediterranean island’s health system is in an “extremely good shape”.

But he also warned that the healthcare system and the economy would not be able to cope if things get out of hand as they did in other countries.

The country’s epidemiological picture has taken a turn for the worse as cases have largely remained in three digits over the past two weeks and it is believed that only tighter restriction can stop the spread.

Health authorities in October alone have reported 2,611 cases, more than half of a total of 4,563 since the outbreak in early March.
