Police carrying out criminal inquiry into death of 8 year old girl

Relevant News

Police will carry out a criminal investigation into the death of an eight year girl from septic shock at Limassol Hospital early on Monday morning.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said that among other issues the inquiry will look into possible medical negligence as well as the possible responsibility of any other person.

Investigators have taken a significant number of statements from doctors, family members and other involved parties and these create the basis for a criminal investigation, he said

Asked by the Cyprus News Agency whether there was any responsibility on behalf of the mother, he said; “for the time being nothing has arisen against the mother.”

Once the inquiry is completed a report will be sent to the attorney general for further instructions.

Police have also written to the Health Ministry asking it appoint an official to investigate possible medical negligence.

On Tuesday, the Health Ministry said that doctors and other medical staff had followed procedures in the treatment of the little girl.

But on Wednesday, the ministry clarified that it has appointed an investigator to facilitate the work of the police.

According to the ministry the little girl was taken to hospital late on Sunday afternoon with high temperature by her mother, who despite the advice of the doctors, opted to take her home rather than have her admitted to the children’s ward.

She returned a few hours later with the child in comatose condition and despite doctors’ efforts the girl died.
