Over 3,700 permanent civil servants in Cyprus also active in private companies

Relevant News

Over 3,700 permanent civil servants in Cyprus are also active or non-active members of one or more private company – either as shareholders or as directors or secretaries.

This is what Philenews reported on Thursday citing latest Audit Office findings.

In particular, an audit carried out in August 2020 has disclosed that around 1,900 government employees – permanent and indefinite-contract ones – were found to have shares in one or more private companies.

Of these, 200 are members of the National Guard and 150 are police officers and firefighters. It was also disclosed that an additional 900 civil servants are directors and a further 900 are secretaries in private companies.

The issue was debated before the House Committee on Institutions on Wednesday with Audit Office representatives saying some of the 3,700 civil servants do not declare they are civil servants.
