Motorcycle crash deaths cost the economy some €250 million annually, according to an EU study on the social and economic impact of traffic-related fatalities.
This is what Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos told the House Transport Committee on Thursday, adding that one-third of road deaths annually are motorcycle riders. Specifically, around 15 motorcyclists per year.
The Minister has tabled two bills that regulate the duration of the student license as well as special gear that must be worn by professional motorcycle drivers.
The Ministry also plans to license a number of garages to ensure that all motorcycles are holders of a valid MOT. And one million euros will be budgeted over the next three years so as to provide special protective equipment to motorcycle riders.
Also, a Fix Cyprus application has been set up where road network users, pedestrians or drivers, will be able to enter data for problems they find in the road network.
The data entered will be recorded so that the road network is improved.
