The President of the Republic is waiting for the verdict of the criminal investigator, refraining from any comments about what is happening in prisons while questions arise about whether the signal of mobile phones should be blocked for good in prisons.
Asked on the issue, the President refrained from any comment before the criminal investigator issues his verdict. Transport Minister Giannis Karousos said that the Electromechanical Service has done what it should have done to block the mobile phones in prisons while the system will be upgraded in one to two months.
Justice Minister Stefi Drakou is expected to Cyprus today. The Minister has been strongly criticized about a letter stressing the need to take full advantage of the system to block mobile phones in prisons, to record which inmates use mobile phones and the data of their phone-calls and inform the Police accordingly.
