The met office has raised its extreme high temperature warning to orange, saying that the inland maximum temperature on Wednesday is expected to rise to around 42 C and to around 32 C over Troodos’ highest peaks.
The orange alert comes on the back of two yellow alerts issued on Monday and Tuesday as a heat wave continues to grip Cyprus.
The orange alert is in force from 12 noon to 5 pm.
In issuing the warning, the met office said: “Be prepared that high temperatures will lead to health risks amongst vulnerable people e.g. the elderly and very young. Listen to and act upon advice from the authorities.”
In its early morning weather bulletin, the met office said that a hot air mass is affecting the area.
Wednesday will be mainly fine. Temperatures will rise to 42 C inland, around 35 C on the south and east coasts, around 31 C on the remaining coasts and around 32 C in the higher mountains.
Tonight will be mainly fine although there may be patchy fog and low cloud in the early hours of the morning. Temperatures will fall to 24 C inland and on the south and east coasts, around 21 C on the remaining coasts and 20 C in the mountains.
Thursday will be mainly fine with temperatures edging down a little.
On Friday there will be increased cloud at intervals while on Saturday, clouds that develop from midday on may lead to scattered showers and/or isolated thunderstorms in the mountains and possibly inland.
No noticeable change is expected in temperatures inland and in the mountains, but they will gradually edge down on the coasts, it added but noted that temperatures will remain above average for the time of year.
