After the completion of work at Makarios Avenue, everyone hoped that consumers would start going back to the shops along the road and that the situation would improve for the shop-owners who have been struggling now for years also due to the operation of regional malls.
For the time being Makarios Avenue has been handed over to private vehicles at the decisions of the Nicosia Municipality and of the Chief of Police.
Very few consumers are seen in the shops while most citizens are outside the Citizen Service Center.
The uncertainty about the future of Makarios Avenue is expressed in an announcement by the Papaellinas Group of companies which made known that it will freeze the investment plans on Makarios Avenue due to uncertainties.
The president of shop owners at Makarios Avenue, however, said that the work done in the area has positively helped the survival of the region. He pointed out that the decision of the Papaellinas Group is isolated but admitted that the large number of closed shops are sending the wrong messages.
