Lute concludes meetings, leaves Cyprus

Relevant News

Jane Holl Lute, special envoy of the UN Secretary General, left Cyprus early this morning, having concluded her contacts here.

During her brief visit she was received by President Nicos Anastasiades and met with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, in the northern Turkish occupied part of the divided capital Nicosia.

According to reliable sources, Lute had no further contacts on the island.

In the coming weeks, she is due to have meetings in Ankara, Athens, London and Brussels, but no confirmed dates have been fixed yet.

“She will report back to the UN Secretary General once she has met all the parties,” the same sources have told CNA, noting that “her mandate is separate to the UN in Cyprus, she is running her own show.”

The purpose of her visit here, as announced earlier on, was to sound out the intentions and positions of the two sides in Cyprus and talk to the interested parties in order to establish whether the stalled UN-led peace talks can resume, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement to reunite the island, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion
