For pupils at Ayios Antonis primary school in Limassol yesterday’s downpour meant not only no playtime, but flooded classrooms.
Photos below show the school practically turning into a lake, obliging the school management to interrupt classes and send the children home early.
Videos posted on social media yesterday showed streets turning into rivers in central Limassol while infuriated residents have slammed municipal authorities for failing to take timely action to prevent a repeat of previous experiences. They say that every time there is heavy rain, the streets flood and their cars and properties are damaged.
But Limassol Mayor Nicos Nicolaides defended the municipality’s efforts. He said crews had worked hard to clear drains and would continue to do so. But he added that he had ‘inherited’ the problems and said Limassol needs anti-flooding projects.
