Relevant News

Larnaca Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced a 26 year old man to 12 years in jail after he pleaded guilty to possession of 28.8 kilos of cannabis with intent to supply.

The man was placed under surveillance by anti narcotics police who stopped and searchd his car on September 27, 2018 as he left his father’s farm in Kalo Chorio, heading for Limassol. In it they found five packages of cannabis. During a search of the farm they found four cartons with 26.5 kilos of cannabis. The cartons had been transported to Cyprus from Barcelona via Athens with the defendant picking them up at customs.

In passing sentenced, presiding judge Nicolas Sandis said that in mitigation the court had taken into consideration the man’s clean record, his admission and apology, the remorse he has shown, his young age, the health problems and financial problems he faces and his pledge to become law abiding and enter a drug rehabilitation programme.

He said the defendant was registered at the school at Central Prisons and was taking lessons in English, psychology, wood carving and silver making. He had also joined the prison’s drama group.

But he said that although the defendant may not have been the mastermind behind the crime he should have thought before committing the offence of transporting the drugs for a fee of 1000 euro for every kilo, thereby becoming an important element in the trafficking.
