June rainfall so far already three times the average for month

Rainfall so far in June is three times the average for the month (297%), while rainfall since October 1 is at 154% of the average, according to figures published by Kitasweather on Friday.

It said that this is the second wettest year since records first started in 1901 with 759.6 mm of rain so far. The wettest full year was 1968/69 when 800 mm of rain were recorded.

Rains since the weekend have led to rivers flowing once again, with an increased inflow to the dams for this time of the year, the site added.

In the past 24 hours, a total of 0.242 million cubic metres (mcm) of water has flowed into the dams bringing the total since October to 261,331 mcm. Dams remain 92.2% full — more than four times the 21.6% levels recorded on the same day last year.

Although water consumption is up, dams levels are dropping very slowly because of the recent rains, the site said, adding that yesterday the Xyliatou dam overflowed again.
