The Forestry Department has issued a ‘red alert’,  warning that based on the weather forecast for Tuesday, the risk of forest fires is particularly high.

It appealed to the public to avoid any actions or activities which may cause a fire.

Anyone who spots smoke or a fire within or close to a forest is urged to immediately contact the closest forest station or to telephone 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (fire service).

The Forestry Department announcement came on the back of a yellow alert issued by the Met office warning that maximum temperatures on Tuesday will rise to 41 C inland and 32 C in the mountains.

The yellow alert is in force from 11 am to 5 pm on Tuesday.

In its weather forecast, the met office said Tuesday will be mainly fine with increased local cloud in the afternoon, mainly in the mountains and inland.

Temperatures will rise to 41 C inland, around 35 C on the south and east coasts, around 34 C on the north coasts and around 32 C on the west coasts and in the mountains.

Tonight will be mainly fine, although there may be light fog or low cloud at dawn.

Temperatures will fall to 25 C inland and on the south and east coasts, around 23 C on the remaining coasts and around 20 C in the mountains.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be mainly fine with increased localised cloud in the afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to remain at the same levels on Wednesday, edging down on Thursday and Friday to a little above average for the time of year.
