Ex foreign minister Christodoulides announced 2023 Presidential Elections candidacy

Relevant News

Ex foreign minister Nikos Christodoulides on Thursday announced his independent candidacy for the island’s 2023 Presidential Elections.

The announcement was made live through the internet, at 10:30 am local time.

In January, ruling Disy party-affiliated Christodoulides had tendered his resignation, in an internal power struggle within the right-wing conservatives on their candidate for the presidential elections.

Christodoulides, appointed in March 2018, had long been viewed as harbouring presidential ambitions, causing friction within his own Democratic Rally party.

Disy party leader Averof Neohytou has already been nominated in the presidential race.

Insiders believe opposition centre Diko and socialist Edek have already agreed they will back Christodoulides.
