Relevant News

Cyta, the Cyprus telecommunications authority on Wednesday warned of a new phone scam, urging the public to be careful when taking calls from unknown international numbers and not to give out any personal information.

In an announcement, it said that scammers were using fake international numbers to contact unsuspecting members of the public.

The scammers speak in broken English or Greek, introduce themselves as technical staff of companies such as Cyta and offer to resolve made up security problems.

They ask subscribers to open a specific webpage through which they obtain remote control access and ask them to activate a specific link which in actual fact is malware that blocks the computer. They also ask subscribers for credit card details saying that payment must be made to unlock the computer.

Cyta urged the public to be careful and says those who receive calls from unknown international numbers should not answer, never give any personal information and to immediately notify authorities and their telephone provider.

Cyta subscribers can telephone 132 free of charge.
