Cyprus wants a world free of nuclear weapons-Mavroyiannis

Relevant News

Cyprus will enhance efforts for the promotion of international peace and security and press forward with the ultimate goal of “a world free of nuclear weapons”.

This is what Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis, Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations in New York has said.

He was addressing a high-level meeting to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on October 2.

“Nuclear disarmament is facing numerous challenges and we must work together with determination to prevent our efforts from being reversed,” he said.

“The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a true accomplishment of multilateral diplomacy, is at a critical juncture, the New START Treaty is set to expire in 2021 if not extended, nuclear activities are taking place in a non-verifiable and nontransparent manner, and billions are spent on developing new and more potent nuclear weapons,” he added.

These challenges, he also said, serve as a reminder that there is lack of trust amongst us and that collective security – including the elimination of the threat or use of force – is not yet within reach.
