Cyprus President praises legacy of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev

Relevant News

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasides on Thursday praised the legacy of late former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev saying he had left his personal mark in 20th Century history.

In a post on Twitter, the President also sent his sincere condolences to Gorbachev’s relatives.

At the same time, the embassy of the Republic in Moscow sent its own message noting that Gorbachev was a politician who leaves behind a rich heritage.

And that he will be remembered for a great contribution towards world peace.

Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Gorbachev had forged arms reduction deals with the United States and partnerships with Western powers to remove the Iron Curtain that had divided Europe since World War Two and bring about the reunification of Germany.
