Court orders man charged with raping former girlfriend be held in custody

Relevant News

Paphos Criminal Court on Thursday ordered a 24 year old man charged with assaulting and raping his former girlfriend be held in custody after the prosecution said he had broken the terms of a restraining order.

The defendant was released under conditions on June 11 after pleading not guilty to kidnap, threatening behaviour, assault leading to serious bodily harm, rape and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

He is accused of kidnapping and raping his former girlfriend on April 24. He is also accused of trying to influence the course of justice by asking her to withdraw her complaint and offering to pay her 1000 euro and to pay off her 500 euro electricity bill.

The defendant is also charged with forcefully entering the woman’s home on April 8 and threatening to throw her off a cliff . He is also charged with illegally entering the victim’s home and assaulting her, causing her serious bodily harm on March 16.

Counsel for the prosecution had initially agreed with the defence lawyer that the defendant be released on bail.

But she later asked the court to remand him in custody because he had violated the court’s retraining order stipulating that he was not allowed to approach the victim or her house within 50 metres.

The court had made clear at the previous hearing that he would be immediately held in custody should he violate this order.

The trial continues on December 9.
