Coronavirus: 1343 travellers checked, 400 in self-isolation

Relevant News

1343 travellers have been screened to date for coronavirus at Cyprus’ airports originating from areas affected by the virus, said the Epidemiological Monitoring Unit of the Ministry of Health in a press conference held earlier today in the presence of the Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou.

In an overview of Coronavirus developments in Cyprus since the global emergence of the virus came to light, the Unit reminded that Cyprus has not recorded any confirmed cases yet and that strict checks have been conducted at the country’s entry points.

In addition, 400 people are in self-isolation and another five have been placed in mandatory quarantine, while 49 laboratory tests were conducted by the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics that came out negative.

Cyprus’ readiness for hospitalising possible coronavirus patients has been tested, the Unit added, as eight suspected incidents were handled by Nicosia and Limassol hospitals deploying the Medical Services’ action plan devised as per the WHO’s instructions.

The Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou called anew on citizens to self-protect and reminded that citizens returning from destinations with confirmed cases to strictly follow the instructions of the competent public authorities.

Ioannou emphasised that “it is no longer a matter of whether we will have a confirmed case in Cyprus but of when,” adding that the ministry is doing everything in its power to mitigate its effects.

On Friday the government closed four checkpoints for a week as a precaution against an outbreak of coronavirus and has increased medical staff at the Ayios Dhometios checkpoint to step up screenings.
