Clock ticking for PDO halloumi production as of October 1

Relevant News

Procedures in Cyprus for the production of halloumi based on European Commission registration provisions as a protected designation of origin (PDO) product from October 1 are on fast-track.

Even though the deadline is extremely tight, insiders tell Philenews.

And this because the inspection body must carry out appropriate controls throughout the production chain – from feed, milk production to preparation of the final product.

In addition to the 3,500 breeders – cattle, sheep and goat farmers- and 150 farmers who wish to join the control and certification plan for the use of the PDO stamp they will have to obtain a relevant certificate.

In an effort to facilitate the whole process, the Ministry of Agriculture – in consultation with the Bureau Veritas control body – decided to grant approval in principle to those who submit a responsible declaration for inclusion in the control and certification system by 10 September.

After an administrative check, they will provide a temporary certificate while, in the long run, on-site inspections will be carried out.
